the good one                     Salt Evaporating Ponds, Salin-de-Giraud, France, 2012.

These photographs were taken 2012-13 in the Camargue, the massive delta of the Rhone River where it empties into the Mediterranean near Marseille. They play with space and scale, time and movement, depth or lack thereof. They are filled with fine details, textures, and patterns as well the effects of the Mistral, the fierce winds that comes barreling down the Rhone Valley from the Alps. In these photographs, his first landscape project in color after nearly fifty years as a photographer, Leonard Sussman attempts to transform ordinary or mundane subjects into something of beauty. These transformations are what bring strength to the work.
