Under the Surface
Opening night: Saturday, June 2nd from 6:00 to 10:00PM
by appointment until June 8Th.
Daniel Goudrouffe, who describes himself as a photographer-author, creates compelling visual narratives about the complexity of life in the Caribbean and its diaspora. His images engender an affective meditation on the beauty of the quotidian. Yet, his archive of the contemporary Caribbean equally enables a public reckoning with the impact of slavery and colonialism in the region.

In the work in progress Under the Surface, I use portraiture to explore diversity through an immigrant’s vision. The darkroom is the main source of my creative process. The deep connection that I feel in the darkroom is a metaphysical experience that is reflected in my work.
I take a new approach to traditional Tintypes and Ambrotypes processes. This body of work combines mixed media: digital and analog film. In this project, I also include a short video art inspired by my last collaboration with the Guadeloupean percussionist Klod Kiavué.
