Cristina Ataíde

Opening – October 2nd at 6:00PM
Time and Weather site
The work of Crisitna Ataide presented at The Shed as Time and Weather is the result of her experience at Wave Hill in the Bronx during the winter of 2014. During her residency Cristina, born and raised in the temperate climate of Portugal, focused on two elements: her encounter with snow which she used as a medium and the felling of a Fagus Silvatica tree due to sickness.
The two natural encounters raised questions beyond the environment. These questions relate to the ephemeral quality of nature, its destruction and decay, similar to the human body. Time and Weather recreates these moments at Wave Hill.
Cristina Ataide lives and works in Lisbon. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts (Sculpture) and also attended Design Studies there. From 1987 to 1996 she was Head of the Sculpture and Design departments at MadeIn, a Portuguese marble production company, working with artists like Anish Kapoor, Michelangelo Pistolleto, Keit Sonnier and Matt Mullican. Between 1997 and 2012 she taught as a guest lecturer in Lusofona University in Lisbon.
Her work, often produced while traveling, moves between sculpture and drawing, photography and video. Her work has been exhibited widely in Portugal, Spain and Brazil.
