India Material is an artistic take on the spiritual concept of reincarnation, the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The fruits of an artist residency in India, the works integrate video with early forms of animation and historic apparatuses, precursors to modern time-based media. The loop in particular acts as a vehicle to virtually sculpt from everyday life essential, alas transient moments while keeping everything in flux – replay ad infinitum.
Alexander Hahn (b. 1954 in Rapperswil, Switzerland) is an electronic media artist. He graduated at the Zurich School of Art and Design in 1979 and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program, New York, NY in 1981.
Hahn’s work has been exhibited widely internationally, including Harvestworks, New York, NY; The International Center for Photography, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin, Germany; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria; the NAMOC – National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce, Genova, Italy; Gallerie d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Ferrara, Italy; Galeria Foksal, Warsaw, Poland; Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland; Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland; Musée Jenisch, Switzerland; Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Switzerland; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Hahn has been awarded the Young Swiss Art Price, the Cultural Prize of the Canton St. Gallen and grants from NYFA, NYSCA, Art Matters New York, the Swiss Cultural Council, the City of Zurich. He was a fellow at the DAAD, Berlin and the Fondazione Bogliasco, Italy.
